3. Add energy meters (Electricity, Natural Gas, and other) to your ESPM property
There are three ways to add energy use information to your ESPM property(ies): manually, by filling in and uploading a spreadsheet, or by setting up an automatic data exchange with your utility provider (
Help Desk Article). Before setting up the data exchange, please ensure all of the meters accounting for the building’s total energy consumption have been added to the property profile in ESPM.
STEP 1 - Select your property from the MyPortfolio tab and click on the Energy tab. Click on ‘Add a Meter’.
STEP 2 - Select the type(s) of meter(s) (Electric or Gas, etc.), the energy source (Purchased from the grid or generated onsite) and enter the number of meters for each energy type. If your building has any energy meters managed by tenants, be sure to add these meters as well. If your building uses Renewable Natural Gas, please add a “Natural Gas” meter to your property, then refer to STEP 4 below. After adding this information, click ‘Get Started’.

STEP 3 - Click the white rectangle below ‘Date Meter became active’ to start adding the required information about your meters:
- Meter name (can include type of meter and account # for easy identification)
- Meter type (Electric, Gas or other)
- Units (Electric meter units = kWh; Gas meter units = GJ)
- Date meter became active
After adding this information, click ‘Create Meter(s)’
STEP 4 (Applicable only if your building uses Renewable Natural Gas)
Once you have added a Natural Gas meter to your property, you can indicate Renewable Natural Gas usage by filling out the “Percent Renewable Gas” column found in the “Monthly Entries” section of the Natural Gas meter. The “Percent Renewable Gas” column must be filled out for all 12 months of the reporting period for the metrics to be correctly calculated.
If the meter switched to Renewable Natural Gas partway through the year, you can indicate this by entering “0” in the “Percent Renewable Gas” column for the months preceding the switch to Renewable Gas, as illustrated in the screenshot below:
